What are two retired Americans doing in Honduras?

Our mission has been serving in San Pedro Sula since June of 2006.   We named our ministry Manos Unidas en Cristo – Hands United in Christ because God showed us what many churches and denominations could do when working together.   Today many pastors, churches and youth teams are part of our ministry team.

We want everyone we meet to understand how much God loves them.  We believe this can happen by first meeting the needs of those we reach out to in Christ’s name.  We do some basic first aid care, supply personal hygiene products, and provide showers, a hot meal, a movie and a wonderful time of worship.

More importantly we really touch them… We hug those we meet.  We minister to girls from a state orphanage and people living on the streets and the first thing we notice is they don’t expect for anyone to care about them.  We reach out and hug them and tell them that they are important – and we know it because God says HE loves us all.   Many of the people we minister to have been treated like lepers and that first hug is a surprise.  The response we get – they break out in smiles.

We love seeing our street boys raise their hands in praise of a God that loves them.   We know our ministry brought them closer to Christ.

Those that come here to serve are also touched by what they see during their time here.  They are forever changed after serving beside our team… touching lives for Christ will also change your life.   We encourage all Christians to go on a foreign mission trip.    Come and see all that God can do through you.

Let us tell you a bit about us, Terry and Shari Sorah. We are parents to 6 grown children and currently have 8 grandchildren.

Terry was raised as a Christian & accepted Christ at 13 and was baptized.   Shari was raised Jewish and spent many years seeking God.

We have been active leaders at church for many years but when we changed churches in ’97 Shari heard a message preached that touched her deeply. She soon understood what it was she had been seeking for many years.  Although she had believed that she was a Christian, she now understood what it meant to have a relationship with Christ.

We have been active in many areas of ministry - helping with our church’s food pantry and reaching out to the homeless both in Michigan and in GA.  We have both been members of our church choir and worked with the children’s ministry.

While here on a mission trip in 2005 we fell in love with the people of Honduras.  We soon knew the vision that God had for our mission and it was clear that God had been training us for years to do the kind of ministry we now are doing. We reach out to the very young, homeless and underprivileged with God’s word, food and encouragement.

Although we are now far from family and friends back in the states, we love living and serving in Honduras. We try to visit the states twice per year for a visit and to share our ministry with others.  We challenge others to go on a short term foreign mission trip to experience all that God has created them to do and know hearts will be forever changed.
